On Saturday 8th June, the Friends of Lister Lane Cemetery hosted the 2019 AGM of the National Federation of Cemetery Friends (NFCF). Over 40 NFCF members representing cemetery friends groups from around the country attended the event held at the Inspire Centre, Calderdale College.
The day's proceedings were opened by Deputy Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Angie Gallagher, who welcomed everyone. Holly Lynch, MP for Halifax then spoke, including fascinating anecdotes about her own family history. David Glover, Chairman of the Friends of Lister Lane Cemetery then presented an illustrated talk detailing the former Halifax General Cemetery’s history.

Our visitors were then invited to participate in conducted tours of the cemetery which was greatly enhanced by the presence of members of the Halifax Thespians, who acted the part of characters buried in the cemetery. Persistent rain did not appear to dampen the enthusiasm of either the actors or the visitors.

Back at the Inspire Centre, a good buffet lunch awaited which included appropriately themed cupcakes.
After lunch the formal business of the NFCF AGM got underway.

The Cemetery was opened on Sunday 19th May as part of National Cemeteries Week (NCW) which ran from 11th to 19th May 2019. NCW is coordinated by the National Federation of Cemetery Friends to highlight the work of cemetery Friends groups throughout the UK whose volunteers work hard to support the owners in keeping local cemeteries and burial grounds tidy and safe. The work undertaken by cemetery Friends includes engaging with the community through events and Open days.
The colourful display of flowers currently in bloom near the Lister Lane entrance creates a welcoming sight for visitors entering the cemetery from Lister Lane. This is all down to the hard work and dedication of our team of lady gardeners.
On Sunday, our visitors were able to enjoy guided tours led by David Glover and Stuart Wilkinson or search for family graves, partake of refreshments and have a chat with our friendly volunteers.
