To honour the centenary of the Armistice which ended the Great War in 1918; the gates at the cemetery entrances were draped with banners containing hundreds of handmade poppies crafted by many local people.
The formal unveiling of the poppy banners by the Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor Marcus Thompson took place at the Lister Lane entrance on Wednesday 7th November.
Following the welcome and introduction, the Mayor and visitors were invited into the cemetery to view the poppy banners on the Gibbet Street gates and the poppy displays in front of the former mortuary chapel.
On Remembrance Sunday between 10.30am and 3.00pm, the gates of all three cemetery entrances plus the gate to the chapel were draped with poppy banners. The Friends were very plesaed to welcome a steady stream of visitors throughout the day.
The Friends of Lister Lane Cemetery would like to extend a warm thank you to all the individuals and groups who helped with knitting and crocheting poppies and to Sue Johnson for the brilliant job she did in sewing them together to produce the stunning banners for the gates.
Lister Lane Cemetery is the final resting place for four men who were involved in the Great War conflict and another twenty-one are commemorated on family graves. More information about the WW1 commemorated can be found on this website's WW1Commemorated page.
